Natural Sound Rogue trader Nick Leeson was released from prison on Saturday, four years after causing the collapse of Britain's oldest commercial bank. Leeson caused Barings Bank to fold in 1995, by making unauthorised futures trades that lost 1.4 billion U-S dollars. The 32-year-old, formerly Barings Futures' general manager in Singapore, was released for good behaviour after serving only three and half years of a six and half year sentence at Tanah Merah prison. He was immediately deported back to London, where a court has imposed tight financial controls on his future lifestyle. He was escorted aboard a British Airways flight that took off at 11:35 p.m. (1535 GMT). More than 50 journalists waited outside in a tropical rainstorm for a glimpse of Leeson leaving Singapore's fortress-like Tanah Merah prison, where he has spent the past three and a half years. But they were to wait in vain. Leeson was first spotted by reporters getting out of a police car at Changi International Airport, where security was tight in preparation for his arrival. Wearing a broad smile and a shaved head, the Briton was whisked through passport control by two guards. While in prison, Leeson battled colon cancer and was divorced by his wife, Lisa. Prison authorities say the cancer is now in remission. Leeson was one of a clique of cocky, high-flying young traders who worked in Singapore during Asia's financial boom in the early 1990s. Working for Barings Bank in Singapore, Leeson made unauthorised futures trades that lost 1.4 billion (U-S) dollars. The bad deals ended in disaster and led to the bank's collapse in 1995. Leeson fled Singapore but was caught in Frankfurt, Germany and brought back to the island republic, where a court sentenced him to six and a half years in jail for fraudulently hiding losses. Once freed, private investigators will still be pursuing Leeson, trying recover any hidden assets or money he could receive by selling the rights to his life story. A Singapore law firm representing liquidators for the now-defunct Barings Futures Singapore said it plans to keep investigating whether Leeson has any money hidden away from his Barings days. In addition, a court froze Leeson's worldwide assets after he reportedly sold his story to a British tabloid, London's The Times newspaper reported on Saturday. He is expected to be served with court papers when he arrives in London, the newspaper said. He will also be somewhat of a celebrity. Newspapers are reportedly vying to get the notorious criminal's interview for a six-figure sum, while a movie based on his case, 'Rogue Trader', premiered last week in London before a star-studded audience. A 700,000 U-S dollars advance for the book upon which the film is based has allegedly gone toward Leeson's huge legal bills.
